A test for pre-eclampsia
We are funding a research project to develop a single, accurate test to identify pregnant women who are at risk of pre-eclampsia. Dr Ian Crocker is Senior Scientist on the project at St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester.
He explains the progress they’re making, and what keeps him dedicated.
“I’ve had a career-long interest in the biology of human pregnancy, its complications and impact on other medical conditions. Initially this interest stemmed from basic scientific curiosity, but has since become keener with the birth of my own children.
Pre-eclampsia is a serious and unpredictable complication of late pregnancy. Currently, it is difficult to treat, and premature delivery of the baby may be necessary. Our goal is to derive a screening test for women in early pregnancy, to predict who will go on to develop this condition. Identifying these women will help to ensure they receive the medical care they need. It will also allow us to develop ways of preventing pre-eclampsia in the future.
The consequences of pre-eclampsia for the mother, baby, partners and family are varied and sometimes catastrophic. Some pregnant women are told they are at greater risk of pre-eclampsia, which can also increase their anxiety. A screening test for this condition could be used to reassure those women who will not be affected, while continually improving the outcomes for those who will. Preventing this condition altogether is a distinct possibility. The beginning of this process is with the screening test we are currently developing.
Running a research project is a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows. After the initial euphoria that someone not only likes your idea but is willing to support it, comes the hard work of starting, running the project, meeting expectations and keeping it on an even keel.
Nevertheless, the feeling that you are tackling important medical issues which dramatically affect people’s lives is an important driving force. Likewise, the knowledge that you are working on behalf of fundraisers, and on the back of their tireless fundraising efforts, is never far from your mind.”
