Chronic lung disease
Nearly a third of very premature babies are at a high risk of breathing difficulties. Premature babies lungs are not as developed as babies’ born at full term which can often lead to breathing difficulties and potentially chronic lung disease.
Babies may have to endure long stays in hospital and weeks of treatment. Even when they are discharged, some will still be vulnerable to infection and may be frequently re-admitted.
Preventing any injury to the lungs during the first few months of life could make a lifetime of difference to these babies as they grow and develop.
How we’re helping
Previous research has shown that babies who develop chronic lung disease are not able to recruit cells needed to clear their persisting lung inflammation. Our Cardiff-based researchers are investigating the cause of this. Their findings could help improve treatment of babies with the condition.
