Statement from Sparks Chief Executive, Louise Parkes about Diversity and Inclusion
Anyone who has watched the events in America over the last two weeks cannot fail to have been shocked by the death of George Floyd.
It has shone a spotlight on racism and inequality. It has led to uncomfortable questions around these issues in UK society and the charity sector is not immune to this.
I believe that the sector’s ability to move forward successfully, depends on it being able to diversify, reflect the audience we are talking to and step outside our comfort zone. I am personally committed to leading this vital work and have committed to the ACEVO 8 principles to address the diversity deficit in the sector.
At Sparks it is clear that we have not done enough to create a diverse and inclusive culture. The action we need to take cannot just be a short term reaction to recent events but must be about a long term commitment to influencing lasting change. Racism has no place in our organisation and no place in our society. We cannot be silent and must work together to end prejudice, and to build diverse and supportive cultures.
Working with my senior leadership team, and supported by our Board of Trustees, we have started a programme of work to co-create a plan of action to make Sparks more diverse and inclusive.
