Becoming a Community Champion
Dorothy Jones is one of our determined Community Champions, helping us to let more people know about Sparks by fundraising in her local community.
“I heard about Sparks when I attended an interview with them. Whilst I didn’t get the job I had such a good experience meeting the team and hearing about the charity that a month later I offered to do some volunteering for them.
Once I got in touch with Sparks they talked me through the role of Community Champion and the idea of it just fitted perfectly with me. It gave me something specific to work on and was different from what other charities do; I was really impressed by it.
I have been working as a Community Champion for a couple of months now and plan what I do around how much time I have in the week. Recently I have spent a lot of time approaching local shops and applying for their charity of the year. My biggest achievement so far has been getting Body Shop to agree to support Sparks by helping out with samples and goody bags.
I’ve been volunteering for various charities for around 10 years now and I can see myself being with Sparks for a long time. I really do take my hat off to them for the work they do and I’m proud to be a part of their team.
The support I get from my regional fundraiser Helen is fantastic. She is absolutely brilliant, quick to respond and if I need any fundraising materials they always arrive in a few days which just makes my job so much easier, I can get on and do what I had planned.
The best thing for me about being a Community Champion is that I can help Sparks raise their profile and vital funds for their life-saving medical research work for the benefit of babies, children and mum’s- to- be. Whilst not many people at the moment know about Sparks I can be apart of the team who changes that. There is so much that one person can do.”
