Our President

ggggRugby Legend Jason Leonard OBE has been supporting our work since 1993 and is dedicated to raising vital funds and awareness for children’s medical research.

Jason tells us what being Sparks President for 2011 means to him, and what you can do to help make a real difference to children’s health…

When did you first get involved with Sparks?

I was introduced to Sparks all the way back in 1993 by Sparks trustee and rugby star Roger Uttley. The charity struck a chord with me straight away. I have children myself and this is a cause that inspires every parent to step up and get involved.

Why should people get involved and support Sparks?

It’s a small charity so it is a chance to get involved and really feel part of something. Everyone who raises money or awareness for Sparks should know that they, as an individual, are making a huge contribution. It’s not a question of ‘can you afford to support Sparks’, the real question is – ‘can you afford not to?’
We all benefit from the groundbreaking medical research funded by this charity and every child deserves the chance to kick a ball around, dance on stage, score a try or do whatever it is that they love. We have the power to help them do this.

You have been supporting Sparks for almost 18 years – what’s kept you close to the charity all this time?

I truly believe in the cause, it’s as simple as that. I’m lucky enough to have healthy kids myself and I feel for those who are less fortunate. Sparks gives me an opportunity to give something back.

Why did you take on the role of Sparks President?

With the rugby world cup happening in 2011, this year seemed like the perfect time for me to be president. Hopefully my background will help me to raise awareness and get more people involved with Sparks and the tremendous work that they do. I want to inspire others to feel as passionate about the cause as I do.

What Sparks activities do you have planned for 2011?

I attended the golf dinner on 24th February. I’m proud to say that, as well as being great fun, the evening raised an incredible £90,000 for the charity. This money will pay for crucial medical research to benefit the lives of children, babies and their families.
My diary is already filling up with Sparks events as there is always something interesting going on. I am doing the BG Energy challenge, which I’m really excited about, plus I am co-hosting an evening with Martin Johnson at Twickenham, attending a New York legends rugby dinner, hosting my own golf day, attending the winter ball and more!
I’ve also provided a number of auction experiences, one of which was lunch for 19 people with myself. Although I have to say that I’m still astonished that people actually pay money just to spend time with me. As far as I see it, I am just an ordinary guy who was good at rugby and is trying to do something positive for charity.

What one message would you give to our supporters to encourage them to raise vital funds for Sparks?

Getting involved with Sparks will be one of the most rewarding things you do. So my message is, spread the word! Organise an event, follow Sparks on Facebook or tell your friends. Whatever you choose to do, you’re making a difference to our cause. Thank you to everyone for their fantastic support, we couldn’t do it without you.
