In Holly’s memory

Alex and Ian were inspired to support Sparks after their first born daughter, Holly, suffered oxygen deprivation and sadly died shortly after birth in December 2008. Since then they have raised over £50,000 for children’s medical research.

Now the couple are kept busy by their one-year-old twins, Will and Ellie, yet are still passionate about making a Alex and Ian with their twins Will and Elliedifference for others in the future. They have taken on a variety of fundraising activities and challenges, and will both be running the London marathon in 2012 with 15 of their friends, ‘Team H’, in Holly’s memory. The team is aiming to raise an incredible £50,000 from this challenge.

As well as the marathon for Sparks, Ian has also signed up to take on a monumental bike ride from London to Paris with 20 others in May. Alex is doing the London Triathlon in September and is already busy recruiting as many teams as possible to join her in this challenge including lots of other twins mums. Alex says, “After losing Holly we wanted to find something positive we could focus our energies on and to do something which would hopefully mean other families wouldn’t have to go through the same thing as we did. The pain of losing your own child is so unbearable – we want to save as many lives as we can in the future and prevent other people going through what we did.

We discovered that Sparks was funding, amongst other projects, some pioneering research into cooling treatments for babies who suffer oxygen deprivation and we wanted to support this valuable work. Children’s medical research is desperately underfunded but there is some great work going on across the UK and Sparks funding is vital in helping this work continue.”

Join Alex and Ian

Between them Alex and Ian have rallied family, friends and friends-of-friends, to help them in their tireless efforts for the charity. They are keen for others to join them in their mission to raise more awareness and funds for the charity’s vital work.

Alex says “Since we started fundraising I have been amazed at the amount of support we have received from friends, family and people in our local community as well as further afield. Many people worry about how they will get started with fundraising, but it’s amazing how much you can achieve once you get started. Taking on a challenge is an easy way to begin.”
