Is your club running the SPARKS 2s alongside its competition programme? Please encourage all to join me in going for more gold – this time the golden dream of a healthy future for children everywhere

Sir Steve Redgrave CBE, SPARKS Vice-President

You can celebrate another champion in your club– maybe even a national champion – though not quite Olympic just yet

It will give your members more prize winning opportunities

It is open to men’s and ladies’ sections – separately or together

It can be tacked onto your existing event calendar without the need for additional play

SPARKS will handle much of the procedure to save an extra burden for your competition administrator

Your club can commence SPARKS 2s at any stage in the year

Your members will stand a greater chance of winning prizes and national success if you start as soon as possible

Your club can continue with any plans you may already have for a Captain’s Charity without any conflict

It will afford you and other members the chance to claim even greater charitable support by also helping SPARKS to raise money for medical research to help children be born healthy and stay healthy!

Promotional and administration costs are being covered by sponsorship from Next Plc, the leading brand in high street and home shopping

I really hope your club will join me in supporting this most worthy cause and give your members more prizewinning opportunities into the bargain.

It’s a win-win situation.

Yours truly

Sir Steve Redgrave

To register your club for the SPARKS/NEXT golf 2’s click on the logo below or call direct on 020 7340 0678 alternatively see the event format section below.

EVENT FORMAT

The concept is close to the original idea of encouraging players to score more 2s during the whole year

Based on the ‘ball sweep’ whereby a player can win from SPARKS a guaranteed prize in balls (club may nominate 3 or 6 x Slazenger Power Control) each time he/she scores a gross ‘2’ in an event.

This will apply whenever he/she pays to enter SPARKS 2s

SPARKS 2s can operate alongside any competition where the individual score is recorded on a card (ie. including fourballs but excluding foursomes/greensomes).

SPARKS will supply a stock of balls from which your club can allocate prizes instantly

Balls can be supplied with SPARKS logo or without for those who wish to swap locally

The major difference is that a league table for your club will be maintained by SPARKS through the calendar year

This will determine your Club 2s Champion who will receive a prize from SPARKS to commemorate the success.

SPARKS will also determine the National 2s Champion by maintaining a league for all participating clubs throughout the UK

To encourage full participation from golfers of all standards the time-honoured method of ‘levelling the playing field’ through players’ handicaps will be factored into your club league by SPARKS

Similarly the number of par 3 holes on a course will be factored into the National League

The National Champion will be invited to attend an awards ceremony at SPARKS Annual Golf Dinner in January 2003 to receive the star prize in person.

In addition to the club’s own competition fee, SPARKS recommends clubs to charge a minimum of £1.50 to enter SPARKS 2s

Some may choose to charge £2 or £1

If your club pro already runs a 2s sweep you can still run SPARKS 2s for £1.50 but retain 50p of the fee for the pro so as not to detract from his/her business.

Your members may get maximum chances to score in the league (club and national) if starting in January and linking SPARKS 2s to as many competitions as possible

This will obviously increase the potential funds raised for SPARKS, which is great news!

If the league is keenly contested it may also encourage more entries for your own events during the not-so-pleasant golfing conditions of winter.

The most successful fundraisers will also be invited to SPARKS Annual Golf Dinner to receive a prize in person plus the chance to join Sir Steve Redgrave for a fourball’s golf

The national league tables will be featured on SPARKS website and as the site develops we also hope to display club leagues so your members can keep a check on their own progress and an interest in the cause to which they are contributing.

2s NEWS

2s NEWS

(02/09/02)

Zak’s Back

In July Zak Mitchell (Barnham Broom GC) got back into his one 2 per month routine to score his sixth in total. This got his handicap cut to 10 and put him back on top of the National 2s Championship on 4.50 national points.

Sedbergh Golfers 2 the Fore

Not one, but two players at Sedbergh GC, Cumbria set a new record of four 2s in a month during July. This gave Rob Haygarth (20 h’cap) five 2s overall and moved him to second spot in the National Championship with 25 club points and 4.17 national points. Club colleague Matt Parkin (cut to 13) now has six 2s to his credit for 4.0 national points and tied for third place. He and Zak Mitchell are jointly the most prolific 2s scorers.

Ladies Close

Also tied for third place in the National Championship are Pat Weymes (Catterick GC) whose pair of 2s off 16 in July raised her to 12 club and 4 national points alongside Cela Selley (Bush Hill Park GC) who has steadily added four 2s at one per month for 24 club points off 21. They help to make up three ladies in the top eight and five in the top 13.

Eagle-Lee Awaited

Meanwhile Catterick’s Lee Smith also earned a headline for the ladies with only the third eagle-2 in SPARKS NEXT 2s this year.

Barnham Broom Players Swept Along

With a man at the top, fellow Barnham Broom golfers are keen to take up the challenge and this saw Nick Webster score his first 2 in July adding a further two more before the month was out for 12 club points off his 14 handicap. Their club captain Stuart Black was not to be outdone registering his first two 2s off 6.

Chart Toppers Still

Chartham Park GC, Sussex maintained its first place in the Club Fundraising League with another steady month and a gross total just short of the £1,000 mark. However, it is facing increasing competition from Strathmore GC, Perthshire and Bolton Open GC which have been catching up on their admin and pose serious threats.

Over the Hills and Over the Moon

SPARKS is delighted with the initiative of Cotswold Hills GC which ran 2s throughout its Open Week for the benefit of all the visitors. This coupled with the club’s own competition brought in a huge monthly record of £437.77 net, boosted the club right up the table to second place and made it first past the £1,000-mark for gross contributions. The Wentworth Club also had a record month of £249.47 net which would have made it a comfortable winner in any other month so far.

2s NEWS

(30/09/02)

Matt Joins Zak at Top of National 2s Championship

Matt Parkin (Sedbergh GC) followed a record-breaking July by adding his seventh 2 of the year in August which has seen his handicap rightly cut from 14 to 13 to 12. His 27 club points scores him 4.5 national points to match long-time leader Zak Mitchell (Barnham Broom) who failed to notch a 2 in August.

Where There’s a Wills …

Dave Wills also scored his seventh 2 of the year in August and has recorded the highest number of club points (31) off his deservedly reducing handicap (17-16-15). Lexden Wood’s seven par-3s gives him 4.43 national points …….. only just behind the leaders.

Also On the Mark at Lexden Wood

Mark Coltman equalled the monthly record with his four 2s in August taking his total to six – one of them coming in Lexden’s Two Club & Putter competition.

 August Hatricks

Anthony Snape (Chartham Park) plus Robert King and Gary Clarke (both Barnham Broom) all scored three 2s in August. Clarke’s took him to seven 2s for the year.

 Ladies not to be Outdone

While six different clubs are represented by the National 2s Championship’s top dozen players, five of them are ladies and seven feature in the top 16. Bush Hill Park saw both Sarah Carver and Pauline Platt recording two 2s. Sarah’s was her sixth, and Pauline’s fifth makes her the highest-placed club captain. At Chartham Park,Maggie Ellis’ double places her tied for the lead in our only mixed club league.

 Anita’s Ace

Another of Chartham Park’s ladies hit the headlines when Anita Chick (24 h’cap) holed-in-one at the 9th. Only the third ace in SPARKS NEXT Golf2s.

 Park-ing Fine

Chartham Park has also retained its fine lead in the Club Fundraising League for the seventh consecutive month although Cotswold Hills in second place has matched its total gross donations of £1258 to the pound.

Sunny Best for Wentworth

In the height of sunny summer it was the Wentworth Club which was best fundraiser for August having only just been pipped in July by Cotswold Hills’ rewarding Open Week activities.

 2s Countback

We will take the opportunity to point out that in the event of ties at the top of each league, following the spirit of golf’s general countback rule (last 9, last 6, last 3, etc) favouring those who finish strongest, SPARKS NEXT 2s countback will favour the player who scored their 2s last (ie. in December, then November, etc) until the tie is broken. From the charity’s point of view this will hopefully encourage more to enter 2s right through to the year end in search of last-minute 2s.

SPARKS THANKS ALL PARTICIPATING AND HOPES YOUR CLUB WILL BE REGISTERING SOON FOR THE 2003 2s COMPETITION.

IF YOUR VICE-CAPTAINS ARE LOOKING FOR A WORTHWHILE AND PROACTIVE CHARITY PARTNER FOR THEIR YEAR IN OFFICE, SPARKS HAS PLENTY OF GREAT IDEAS ON AND OFF THE COURSE AND WOULD LIKE TO HELP THEM MAKE THE MOST OF THE OPPORTUNITY.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD ON THIS AND 2s TO FRIENDS IN OTHER CLUBS OR MENS/LADIES SECTIONS.

Leading Ladies

Having lead the National 2s Championship in early July, Catterick GC’s Sandra Jones hit the top again after bagging two 2s in September for a total of 22 club points and 7.33 national points. Alison Sayer and Pat Weymes made it three Catterick ladies in the top five as each of them added a 2 for 6.00 and 5.33 nat.pts respectively. However, they can all be caught as Catterick has now finished its 2s for the year.

Strathmore Comes On Strong

The Scots of Strathmore GC (Perthshire) have been catching up on admin and on the leaders. The club now has three players in the top ten of the National Championship. Those scoring three 2s in August included: Gordon Miller, now in 3rd place, with six 2s in total for 24 club pts and 6 nat.pts; in 6th is Gary Gillespie with 20 nat.pts from his six 2s; and Andrew Bell now shares the record of eight 2s in the year so far, but off his 9-to-8-to-7 handicap he has only scored 4.25 nat.pts. Matching Bell’s mark of eight 2s is another Strathmore man Craig McKenna who also equalled the record of four 2s in one month and is tied for 9th spot on 4.75.

Five Clubs Represented in Top Eight

……. and six in the top ten as the five 2s of Duncan McKelvie (Puttenham GC, Surrey) moves him 2nd on 6.67 nat.pts, Lexden Wood GC’s Dave Knight scored a double in September for a total of seven 2s and 5.00 nat.pts, meanwhile 9th placed Maggie Ellis now has 4.75 nat.pts as her third 2 in two months put her clear of the men in her club league at Chartham Park GC.

Chartham Park Still Top

The Sussex club extended its lead to the widest margin since it first hit the top of the Club Fundraising League at the end of February. It would have also won the monthly honours for September but missed the reporting deadline of 14th October. This award went instead to The Wentworth Club for its second win in succession.
